Heat Advisory vs. Extreme Heat Warning: What’s the Difference?
When the temperature climbs, the National Weather Service (NWS) issues alerts to keep people safe. Two of the most common are a Heat Advisory and an Extreme Heat Warning. While both signal hot weather, they differ in intensity, duration, and the actions they recommend.
Understanding the Heat Advisory
A Heat Advisory is issued when temperatures are high enough that the heat index— the combined effect of temperature and humidity—reaches a level that can cause discomfort and mild health risks for most people. The NWS typically issues a Heat Advisory when:
- Temperatures are expected to hit the high 90s or low 100s.
- The heat index will reach 100°F or higher.
- Conditions are expected to last for several hours, usually at least 4.
- There is a risk of dehydration, heat cramps, and heat exhaustion for those who are active or in the heat.
In a string of 90s, for example, a Heat Advisory may be issued to warn residents that a prolonged period of hot, humid weather could affect outdoor activities and routine daily tasks.
Extreme Heat Warning Explained
An Extreme Heat Warning is a step up from a Heat Advisory. It is issued when the heat index is expected to reach a level that can cause serious or even life‑threatening health problems for the general population. The criteria for this warning usually include:
- Heat index values of 105°F or higher.
- Temperatures that could reach the high 100s or low 110s.
- Extended periods—often more than 8 hours—of sustained extreme heat.
- High risk of heat stroke, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, children, and people with pre‑existing medical conditions.
When an Extreme Heat Warning is in effect, the NWS urges people to take immediate precautions, such as staying indoors, using air conditioning, and checking on neighbors.
How the National Weather Service Issues These Alerts
The NWS monitors real‑time data from weather stations, satellite imagery, and predictive models. They calculate the heat index using the temperature and relative humidity. If the heat index meets the thresholds mentioned above, the appropriate alert is issued for the affected region. Alerts are broadcast via local news outlets, weather apps, and the NWS website.
