Born on 30 January 1968, Felipe was the only son of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofía. He earned a degree in law from the University of Madrid and completed a postgraduate degree in international relations at the University of Oxford. His academic background and multilingual abilities have enabled him to engage with global leaders and represent Spain on the world stage.
Family and Lineage
Felipe’s lineage is intertwined with many European royal families. Through his mother, Queen Sofía, he is a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and his ancestry traces back to the House of Bourbon and the House of Habsburg. This complex lineage has historically helped maintain diplomatic ties across Europe.
Marriage and Children
In 2004, Felipe married Princess Letizia Ortiz Rocasolano, a former journalist and television presenter. The couple has two daughters: Princess Leonor, Duchess of Montblanc (born 31 October 2005) and Princess Sofía (born 29 April 2007). Leonor is the heir presumptive, holding the title of Princess of Asturias.
