The Jaecoo 7 has entered the UK market as a mid‑size SUV that aims to blend Chinese manufacturing value with a design language reminiscent of more established European rivals. Honest John’s recent road test puts the vehicle through its paces on everyday roads, motorways and light off‑road tracks to see whether it lives up to the promise of a “better‑than‑average” family hauler.
First Impressions and Exterior Design
At first glance, the Jaecoo 7 presents a bold front end with a wide grille, swept‑back headlights and a sculpted bonnet that gives it a presence on the road. The side profile features a gently rising waistline and 19‑inch alloy wheels that are standard on the test model. Rear styling includes LED taillights that stretch across the tailgate, a design cue that has become common among many contemporary SUVs.
Paint options are limited to a handful of metallic shades, but the test car’s deep blue finish highlighted the vehicle’s clean lines without appearing overly flashy. Build quality felt solid; panel gaps were consistent and there were no obvious signs of cheap trim.
Interior Space, Comfort and Materials
Inside, the Jaecoo 7 offers a spacious cabin that comfortably seats five adults. Front occupants benefit from generous head‑ and legroom, while the rear bench provides adequate space for three passengers on shorter journeys. The boot capacity measures 560 litres with the rear seats up, expanding to 1,620 litres when they are folded – figures that place it in line with rivals such as the Kia Sportage and Peugeot 3008.
The dashboard layout is driver‑focused, with a 10.25‑inch digital instrument cluster and a centrally mounted 12.3‑inch touchscreen infotainment system. Materials vary across the cabin: soft‑touch plastics dominate the upper dash and door panels, while harder plastics are used on lower sections and the centre console. Although the overall feel is pleasant, some surfaces show a tendency to attract fingerprints, a minor drawback noted during the test.
Seats are upholstered in a combination of fabric and synthetic leather, offering decent support for long drives. The driver’s seat includes manual height adjustment and lumbar support; electric adjustment is not available on the base trim.
