Each year, I gather my students around a large poster of a multi‑room house. Every room represents a different place value: units, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on. I begin with a simple question: “What would a number look like if it lived inside this house?” The answer is a story. For example, the number 3,482 becomes three thousand, four hundred and eighty‑two, and we assign each part to a specific room:
