According to the Chilean Seismological Service, a 7.4‑magnitude earthquake occurred in the Drake Passage, roughly 200 kilometres west of the southern tip of South America. The quake’s depth was estimated at about 10 kilometres, which allowed a significant portion of its energy to couple with the ocean floor. Initial analyses indicate that the rupture generated a modest sea‑level disturbance that could amplify as it approaches shallow coastal waters.
